Emily D.

Important Word:
"They" is the word that stands out in the poem that I annotated because these are snippets in the poem in which she is acknowledging the "others" which the reader does not really know who it is. There seems to be evidence that there were a select few that were influencing in her works in which she did not approve of and when she acknowledges them, it is always in a negative way. She has put so much effort in her works, and when outside influence is confining her, "They" are limiting her to her best potential.

They shut me up in Prose

Dickinson is clearly dedicated in her poetry and when it comes to poetry, that is her freedom. People around her are denying her of her rightful freedom.

Emerson
Man is thus metamorphosed into a thing, into many things.

When it comes to freedom, Emerson here is signifying that when Man is giving freedom, there are so many different types of roads that can be taken. Man can become into basically anything that is set to mind, as a way of not only describing freedom but being able to  develop into a variety of careers.

Whitman
I am a free companion

Whitman clearly starts the section off with this statement, a strong one at that. "Free" is the key word here, and Whitman states his role in society, he is free and because of this, he does not experience what people who dont have this privalege .

Douglass
I have had two masters.

While explaining his history, Douglass, explains how from the very beginning he has been under the control of other, white men. The life of a slave is very difficult, from the conditions to the treatment, and having been under control for so long, there is no knowing their potential in life because they havent had freedom.
