Armory

The Armory show of 1913 is an example of modernism because of the new way that artwork was being expressed. Some of the examples that created this new form of artwork was the way that artists created lines and dimensions in sculptures, creating similarities to artworks from other artist before them, just expressed in a new dimensional way. The architecture that was being presented was very intricate in the sculptures, and one of the key things was to move away from the classic, ordinary form that so many artists still kept in their work.

When it comes to the sculpture, Lucifer by Andrew Darsburg, it shows many different sides of an individuals face. The lines that the artist created to express the many side of Lucifer is similar to Hemingway's character Krebs because of the description that the author gives to this one individual. There is so much that can be seen with just the facial appearance and when personality is tied, there may be some similarities to the meaning of the name. In the case of the sculpture, Lucifer, one an tie evil to it and when reading the description of Kreb in Hemigway's book, we get to see how hard his past has been.

When it comes to paintings, the artists were expressing new events, action events, or in other cases expressed a new form of reality. The art that was being painted were everyday objects, just shown in a different light. It can be seem as a new way of how one views the world. The attention was being given to ordinary things but being given a spotlight to a different view in order for the viewer to see a different perspective to it.

A painting by john Sloan, Sunday, Women drying their hair, expresses women doing a simple task. An important factor is that women are being centered. When it comes to Hemingway, there are few glimpses of women that are portrayed. Even though there are few glimpses, they definitely make a statement when they are in the scene.

Revolt of a Mother and Yellow Wallpaper

Both texts, Revolt of a Mother and The Yellow Wallpaper touch on the roles of women, in the domestic sense to be exact. In the Yellow Wallpaper, the female character wanted to simply write, wanted to express her creative side but she was not allowed to do so. She was in no way interested in the domestic life that women were usually subjected to. Her husband was incredibly controlling. His way of keeping her in this situation was locking her away in a room. He thought that she was in a depressed state and thought that this would be the best place for her when in reality, she was in no way in such a state. In Revolt of a mother. the female character was the complete opposite. She was completely fine with taking the typical role of a woman during those times, which included everything from maintaining the household: cooking, and cleaning, as well as well as trying to keep a happy marriage. All that she wanted, and needed was a house for the family to live. She always served and put her family first in order to get this but in the end, she did not get what she desired.

Important Word:
"They" is the word that stands out in the poem that I annotated because these are snippets in the poem in which she is acknowledging the "others" which the reader does not really know who it is. There seems to be evidence that there were a select few that were influencing in her works in which she did not approve of and when she acknowledges them, it is always in a negative way. She has put so much effort in her works, and when outside influence is confining her, "They" are limiting her to her best potential.

They shut me up in Prose

Dickinson is clearly dedicated in her poetry and when it comes to poetry, that is her freedom. People around her are denying her of her rightful freedom.

Emerson
Man is thus metamorphosed into a thing, into many things.

When it comes to freedom, Emerson here is signifying that when Man is giving freedom, there are so many different types of roads that can be taken. Man can become into basically anything that is set to mind, as a way of not only describing freedom but being able to  develop into a variety of careers.

Whitman
I am a free companion

Whitman clearly starts the section off with this statement, a strong one at that. "Free" is the key word here, and Whitman states his role in society, he is free and because of this, he does not experience what people who dont have this privalege .

Douglass
I have had two masters.

While explaining his history, Douglass, explains how from the very beginning he has been under the control of other, white men. The life of a slave is very difficult, from the conditions to the treatment, and having been under control for so long, there is no knowing their potential in life because they havent had freedom.

They shut me up in Prose --
As when a little Girl
They put me in the Closet --
Because they liked me "still" --
Still! Could themself have peeped --
And seen my Brain -- go round --
They might as wise have lodged a Bird
For Treason -- in the Pound --
Himself has but to will
And easy as a Star
Abolish his Captivity --
And laugh -- No more have I --

They shut me up in Prose --
Prose? Isn't that her strength? Why is there so much emphasis at the beginning on the word Prose? Was this the only way that people were able to communicate with the poet?

As when a little Girl
She is no longer a "little Girl." How are her surroundings during this time? why are they treating her like she is a young person when she is set to become an established poet? There may be something she is wanting to say with the choosing of the gender specified, age as well.

They put me in the Closet --
Literally? Most likely they were not allowing Dickinson to fully establish herself during this time. She was not allowed to cully put her creativity in her works at the time.

Because they liked me "still" --
Did they not like her before? Probably there was some liking in her character but there was something that wasn't approved in society. Was she working towards being "liked?

"Still! Could themself have peeped --
At this point she is starting to lose it. So much commotion concerning her character is getting the best of her. Why does it seemed as if she is being closely watched?

And seen my Brain -- go round --
It seems as if she has had enough. There might have been so much already going on in her life and with so much influence, it is bound to affect her. People around her might be noticing her demise.

They might as wise have lodged a Bird
She will not give up in her quest to become free. She is trying to express that idea, whether people get it or not.

For Treason -- in the Pound --
Treason? What is she implying? Is the situation worst than what one thinks? What is her life really like?

Himself has but to will
Is she being held back by something, or someone? Will? Is there something that she might be waiting for?

And easy as a Star
What is easy about a star? Could she be staring at one and looking at the arrangement of the stars and thinking about their evolution?

Abolish his Captivity --
WHo is he? There is something that is not yet clear on what Dickinson is trying to express. She is very demanding in this phrase, as if she is saying this to a foe.

And laugh -- No more have I --
With all of what she has said before, seeming to be serious, why would there be a need to laugh? Is freedom a joke? Is the situation a joke?

When looking back at the poem, what i find interesting is that there are several underlying factors that arise. Although I'm not sure on what  that may be, Dickinson is detailing unknown factors to the reader.

American Soldier-Emerson

It seems that Emerson is emphasizing the importance of the self, and how everything is determined by the self. There is no need to spend a large portion of life reading what others have written about a theory, it should be up to the individual to have their own interpretation of what life has to offer. if anything, the works that philosophers have produced should serve as a guideline that is subject to change; in other words, use published works to inspire your own. One should concentrate on their surroundings, and serve that  as inspiration to  what life has to offer. Emotions should arise, as well as other emotions and with that said, should be a connection between  the individual and nature. There are so many opportunities to grow as an individual through experiences and obstacles that are presented to an individual, and it is up to that sole person to determine how to approach it.

Freedom

When it comes to Emerson, he defines freedom as being independent from those around us. He states that one must not follow those that get in the way of our education/learning. Whitman states that we are connected to nature; we have to be ourselves and not let the imitation take us from the beauty nature has to offer us. There are whimsical moments that create lasting memories. Lastly, for Douglass. education is the way to freedom. The more we know, one is able to escape from the unknown. Knowledge is very important. The similarities that i see is that they all have a relation to becoming a person of knowledge. The road to enlightenment is not easy but each author is searching for their own individual road for that answer. Each author has been in a different situation, as for Douglass, he was part of the slave period, as oppose to the other two, Douglass' has more of a challenge to pursue his freedom. Emerson's obstacle with freedom was the issue of he bookworm. Reading other people opinions when it comes to stories willnot make you free because you are living through their works. Finally, Whitman's obstacle were the people around him, in other words, society. Society was holding him back from giving his opinions towards the world.  An important thing to take notice is that each individual needs to be themselves when there is no disguise.

Journey Narrative

A group of seven kids embark on a journey for treasure when they find a map at one of the character's house. Upon finding the map, they immediately go in search for the treasure so that they can pay off the debt of their house, especially since they only have 24 hours to come up with a substantial amount of money. Thought their journey for the treasure, there's 3 convicts that are also interested in the treasure and follow the road that the kids have gone through. The deeper into the adventure the kids go in, they find challenges along the way to avoid them from finding the treasure. They all need to work together in order to advance deeper in the underground trail to find the treasure and once again come back home to save the house. Their development from children to adults is key because at the beginning of the film, they just care about having fun, to later on being saviors to their parents, and to once again be carefree kids. Once they reach the end, they find a ship filled with gold , diamonds, etc.(treasure) trying to find an exit to escape the convicts that want to kill them, they are able to get out and end up at the beach near their house. It may seems as if they were far from home, but in reality, they are just underneath their hometown. With eviction already looming, the nanny finds a bag full of jewels that will help pay off the money owed so that they can keep their house.
